Spices of India (year 2 - 4 children). Show spices to children to see, smell and feel, which are added to food familiar to them such as korma or pulao rice. Coconut Illustrate a coconut when split open and grated, explain how it could be used in different forms such as coconut cream, desiccated etc The different functions of a coconut tree (e.g. the shell used to make musical instruments, vessels) The function of its leaves e.g. used as broomstick (All imported from India) Mango fruit used in a cooling delicious drink e.g. mango lassi Children able to taste poppadum Costumes 7-9 years old Girls able to wear sarees, salwars, with bindis and bangles Kurta (boy’s clothes). Same available for older children Culture General on north and south India etc with illustrations Demonstration of Indian food: Milk shakes, snacks, rice, salad or dessert. Feedback from students: All the costumes and food are lovely-‘we want to be Indian’. (Students from Norton primary school) ‘I liked the Indian cookery because it was very interesting’. ‘I liked Indian cooking as I got to know what Indians eat’. ‘I learnt a lot about India. Fee: Schools: £75.00 an hour. Out of school clubs: £50.00 per hour For demonstrations-The cost for ingredients will be separate. Please pay by cash/cheque after the activity. These activities assist children understand the culture of people from different parts of the world, thus helping them bridge the gap on cultural differences. |
